Nuts & Bolts: Building Blocks for Solid Practice

10:00 am – 12:00 pmNo matter the level, belly dancers begin with the very basic of technique. In this workshop, we will revisit the nuts and bolts of building a strong personal practice. After a brief discussion of preparation, we will begin with a warm up session. We will then touch on conditioning, followed by a study of posture and form, framing, and solidify technique on hits and locks, fluid movement, shimmies, turns, levels and travel. Bring your energy because we will be drilling these concepts as much as our two hours will allow. We will end the session with a cool down session.

Lunch Break: 12 – 1:30 pm

Polish & Shine: Creating Your Dance and Finding Your Style
1:30 – 3:30 pm

You’ve got your basic skills. Now what? Now you learn how to make them better. After a brief warmup, we will discuss musicality and how to use the music to drive your dance. Next we will work on stylization such as pop and lock, serpentine movement, and hit-recoil-release, and flow through transitions and travel. We’ll add expression–selling your dance to your audience and drawing them in–and round out our session with some short exercises and a cool down stretch.

What to bring:
A yoga mat
A notebook and pen
Water
A yoga/pilates band or scarf for hip opening stretches

Bio
Mary (aka Cybele Noire) discovered belly dance at a young age (in a James Bond flick), and tried a class or two in her early 20s but was never brave enough to fully pursue it. It wasn’t until her mid-30s that she took her first class at Desert Dance Studio in 2008. She hasn’t looked back since. Mary honed her skills under the mentorship of Desert Dance Studio owner, Angela Fournet, but got her Tribal toes wet under the instruction of Mistress Ilea McGee of Trybe Habibi Bizarre. She has since expanded her learning to workshops and masterclasses with a veritable “Who’s Who” of Tribal and Tribal Fusion: Jamila Salimpour, Carolena Nericcio, Jill Parker, Rachel Brice, Deb Rubin, Ariellah, Zoe Jakes, Sharon Kihara, & Cera Byer. In Ocober 2012, she will begin certification in Rachel Brice’s 8 Elements.
